About Ilocos Sur
Ilocandia is a term for the traditional homeland of Ilocanos. Ilocos Sur was named the Heart of Ilocandia. When visiting the province, it is as if one is taken back to history, especially when walking upon Vigan’s brick roads and taking a glimpse of the Hispanic-style buildings. Calle Crisologo is a must when in Ilocos Sur, because of the retained colonial architecture.
The delicious sausage Longganisa, Deep-fried Bagnet, saucy Pinakbet, and fresh Empanada satisfy travelers’ taste buds. Ilocos Sur was once one province with Ilocos Norte until 1818 when a Royal Decree was issued by the Spanish Government to separate the two so that they would have better control over the two areas.
Born in Ilocos Sur were revolutionary female hero Gabriela Silang, renowned poet Eileen Tabios, and actress, Alma Moreno.
