About Leyte

Leyte is known for its involvement during its role in World War II. It was in Leyte that Douglas MacArthur had returned in October 1944. The Battle of Leyte took place, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf is considered one of the most significant naval battles in history.

People come to visit the violin-shaped Lake Danao, the pure white sandy beach of Kalanggaman Island and the St. Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum. Born in Leyte is the Tinikling, a folk dance involving two people tapping and sliding bamboo poles against each other and on the ground. Another two dancers dance in coordination over, beside, and between the poles.

From Leyte are Tado, the comedian, Leo Lastimosa, a tri-media journalist, and Merlie Alunan, a multi-awarded Filipina poet and author.
