About Marikina City
The Shoe Capital of the Philippines, Marikina, boasts for being the biggest shoe manufacturer in the country as it produces 70% of the nation’s footwear. Marikina’s devotion to Shoes doesn’t stop there as it also has the Philippine International Footwear Center and the Shoe Museum with former First Lady Imelda Marcos’ remarkable shoe collection.
In 1655, an earthquake with an intensity of 8 had struck the area, resulting in the damage of a Jesuit church. In 1898, then called “Mariquina” was the capital of the Province of Manila.
To take a moment to remember the Marikina River and its significance, the locals have the Ilognayan Festival. For the shopaholics, Marikina Christmas Shopalooza is a must as it is a long holiday festival with numerous stalls offering products at affordable prices.
