One day, a young man named Kauen, the son of a wealthy Raja from a neighboring province, presented precious jewels and gold to Daragang Magayon. However, she rejected Kauen’s gifts. Despite his failure, Kauen arrogantly declared that the maiden would be his one day.

From the distant region of Katagalugan, the news of Daragang Magayon’s beauty reached Gat Malaya. One day, while Daragang Magayon was picking flowers by a stream, Gat Malaya saw her and couldn’t help but admire her beauty. They exchanged glances, and the young man smiled.

“Why are you here alone, beautiful maiden?” asked Gat Malaya, filled with admiration.

Daragang Magayon was startled by the stranger’s voice. “Who are you? And why are you asking me this?”

I am Gat Malaya, from a nearby province. I heard about your beauty and wished to meet you,” said the young man as he reached for the flower held by Daragang Magayon.

Though hesitant, Daragang Magayon handed the flower to Gat Malaya. “Alright, you may get to know me. But don’t think that I am easily won.”

The flowers landed in the young man’s hand, and he pressed them to his left chest.

Their conversation continued, and they became friends. They often met by the stream, and gradually, Daragang Magayon fell in love with Gat Malaya.

“I love you, Daragang Magayon. I am ready to ask for your hand from your father,” said Gat Malaya.

“But what if he doesn’t agree? You are a foreigner,” responded Daragang Magayon, full of worry.

“Don’t worry. I will speak to your father and show him my sincere intentions,” declared Gat Malaya.

The Raja agreed because he liked the young prince. The wedding was set for the full moon, after the harvest. But before it could take place, Gat Malaya left to inform his parents about the marriage and to bring them back to Albay.

Meanwhile, Kauen learned about the upcoming wedding and took advantage of Gat Malaya’s absence. He approached Daragang Magayon and threatened her.

“If I can’t have you, no one else will!” threatened Kauen.

“What should I do? I will not marry you, Kauen. I love Gat Malaya,” responded Daragang Magayon, terrified.

“I will be yours if Gat Malaya does not return,” added Daragang Magayon.

Days and weeks passed, but Gat Malaya did not return. When the full moon came, Daragang Magayon was forced to marry Kauen. Amid the celebration, Gat Malaya arrived with his parents.

“I am here to claim my bride!” shouted Gat Malaya.

“That cannot be!” replied Kauen, and they immediately fought.

In the heat of the battle, Daragang Magayon tried to intervene but was struck by Kauen’s spear. Gat Malaya embraced Daragang Magayon, but he was also hit by Kauen’s spear. Both of them breathed their last.

The Raja and the entire palace mourned. He ordered the two to be buried in the same grave. Days passed, and the land where they were buried rose until it became a volcano. It was named Mount Mayon, in memory of Daragang Magayon.
